Colby Covington takes shots at Jorge Masvidal, Masvidal offers a gym fight
Former friends and teammates Colby Covington (15-1) and Jorge Masvidal (34-13) became enemies as soon as the championship title stood between them.
Initially, Covington was supposed to fight Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title earlier this year. Then Colby turned down the fight and was deprived of the title and replaced by Kamaru Usman. The “Nigerian Nightmare” took his chance and secured a dominant victory to become the new UFC welterweight champion.
The UFC has been holding off the Covington vs. Usman fight announcement and it turned out later that the fight would not happen at all as the negotiations came to a deadlock. The UFC began to look for other options and one of them was Jorge Masvidal, Covington’s teammate, who is on a two-win streak and is number three of the welterweight rankings.
“They went from me to Jorge Masvidal to someone else and Usman turned all of them down,” Covington says. “The issue is not me. I want to fight, I’m ready to fight. I’m healthy to fight. It does bother me that they’ll go to a jobber and a journeyman like Jorge Masvidal and he’s so desperate and he’s so broke right now that he’s going to take any offer the UFC throws at him. He’ll take this basic challenger fee because let’s be honest, he’s 2-2 in his last four fights, he’s 5-5 in his last 10, so he’s going to take anything the UFC gives him.”
“The UFC used Jorge Masvidal as a pawn and we all know I’m playing chess not checkers. They want to use Jorge as a little pawn to fight for the JMF — the journeyman mother-effing title against another scrub and jobber in Nate Diaz, who has a 50/50 record, 1-1 in the last three years, he’s a Stockton soy boy. They just used those guys as pawns against me and Usman.”
When Jorge Masvidal heard this, he wasn’t looking for words and offered his teammate to meet in the gym during training.
“I’ll be at the gym. Colby, if you’re hearing this, you little b*tch, because you will… Because he acts like he is not sensitive at all, but he’s the most sensitive dude I’ve ever met. He cries when he reads comments.”
Jorge Masvidal will return to the cage at the UFC 244 in November but not for a title fight. He’s going to fight Nate Diaz for the “real UFC gangster” title. Meanwhile, Colby Covington said he hoped they would come to some agreement with Kamaru Usman and announce the title fight by the end of the year.
