Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier III could have been last year in New York
UFC 241 takes place this weekend, headlined by the title fight between Daniel Cormier (22-1, 1 NC) and Stipe Miocic (18-3). The heavyweight champion’s return to the cage brought new talks about his long-time rivalry with Jon Jones (25-1, 1 NC).
Jones vs. Cormier III is one of the most debated subjects of the year. However, few people know the trilogy could have ended last year. According to the light heavyweight champion and HARCORD ambassador, the UFC offered him two options: Daniel Cormier or Alexander Gustafsson with both bouts to be held in the light heavyweight division.
According to Jones, he was interested in the fight against Cormier. The UFC wanted to have the bout at the UFC 230 at the Madison Square Garden in New York in November.
Still, for some unknown reasons, the UFC couldn’t bring the idea to life. Cormier performed at the UFC 230 against Derrick Lewis where he defended his heavyweight title. Jon Jones, in his turn, came back to the cage at the UFC 232 in December where he finished Alexander Gustafsson and reclaimed the belt.
It’s worth noting that mere hours ago Jones tweeted that there would be no third fight with Daniel Cormier. The “Bones” is not planning to leave the light heavyweight division and doubts Cormier will descend to 205.
