ISLAM MAKHACHEV MAY FACE EDSON BARBOZA AT UFC 242
Rumors started circulating on Reddit that the top lightweight fighter Islam Makhachev (17-1) will have his next fight at UFC 242 that will take place on September 7 in Abu-Dhabi, UAE. Makhachev’s opponent may be famous Brazilian puncher Edson Barboza (20-7).
The author of the Reddit thread refers to Art du MMA Twitter account that reports that both fighters came to an oral agreement to fight and now all they have to do is sign contracts.
Makhachev is on a five-wins streak including victories over Nik Lentz and Gleison Tibau. He had his last fight at UFC in Saint-Petersburg. His opponent was Arman Tsarukyan and the two showed a spectacular wrestling bout that was called the fight of the night. Islam Makhachev won by unanimous decision. He is now on the 15th position in the UFC lightweight division.
Edson Barboza lost his last fight to Justin Gaethje by KO at UFC on ESPN 2 this March. Before that he had impressively defeated Dan Hooker showing all the beauty of his punches. The Brazilian won only one of his last four fights and if he losses to Makhachev it may become a warning sign of UFC retirement.
The main fight of the UFC 242 is the unification bout between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim title holder Dustin Poirier.
