Kelvin Gastelum shared his thoughts on Israel Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker
Kelvin Gastelum (15-4, 1 NC) could have been the one fighting for Robert Whittaker’s (20-4) championship belt early in the year but the middleweight champion came down with hernia a day before the fight. UFC organized the fight for the interim title that was at stake in Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya (17-0).
In the fight that was christened the fight of the year by many, Adesanya secured character win by unanimous decision after knocking his opponent down a few times in the fifth round. Now, holding the interim title, Adesanya must face Robert Whittaker in a unification bout. UFC hasn’t announced the fight yet but Gastelum has already shared his thoughts on the winner.
“It’s a hard one but Israel has my respect!” Gastelum tweeted. “He really stepped up when I couldn’t! (A mistake I will never let happen again.) and showed allot of heart and so I think he will pull it off and it will set up a rematch between him and I when I win my fight as well.”
“Hopefully, I’ll come back to full training in a couple of weeks. We’ll start negotiating some top fighters for the fall. I’m only 27 and I keep getting better. You think my last fight was good? You haven’t seen my best.”
Before the fight with Israel Adesanya Gastelum was on a two-win streak. In November 2017 he defeated former champion Michael Bisping by KO and then had the fight against Jacare Souza whom he defeated via split decision.
