MAX HOLLOWAY VS FRANKIE EDGAR MAY BE SET FOR UFC 240
It looks like the Octagon veteran Frankie Edgar (23-6-1) will get his title shot against Max Holloway (20-4).
These two were supposed to meet twice in the past but the fight never happened. Yesterday ESPN reported that current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar agreed for UFC 240 that will take place on July 27 in Edmonton, Canada.
The fight is going to be Holloway’s return to the featherweight division after his failed attempt at the lightweight category. This April, at UFC 236 the “Blessed” lost by unanimous decision to interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier. That was his first loss for the last six years – before that he was on a 13-wins streak, including victories over Cub Swanson, Anthony Pettis, and Jose Aldo.
His last fight in the featherweight division Holloway had last December at UFC 231. He was faced by contender Brian Ortega whom Holloway was beating up to the end of fourth round. Then Ortega’s doctor did not allow him to continue the fight, and Holloway won by TKO.
Frankie Edgar was supposed to face Max Holloway last March but the fight fell through because Holloway sustained injury during training. He was replaced by Brian Ortega who defeated Edgar by a first-round KO. The former lightweight champion recovered and won his next fight with Cub Swanson. He is now taking third position in the featherweight ranking.
It’s worth noting that Edgar has already tried to win UFC champion belt in 145 lbs twice but both times lost to Jose Aldo by unanimous decision.
