Valentina Shevchenko vs. Liz Carmouche will headline UFC in Uruguay
UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko (17-3) will return to the Octagon on August 10 to defend her title for the second time. In the main fight of the first UFC event in Uruguay she will face experienced Liz Carmouche (13-6). ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reports the news.
Liz Carmouche is one of the two fighters who managed to defeat Valentina; the other one is Amanda Nunes. As for Liz Carmouche, their fight with Shevchenko happened in 2010 and back then Carmouche won by TKO. Shevchenko dominated the first round but Carmouche gave an upkick in the second that led to a cut under Valentina’s eye which forced the doctor to a stoppage.
A lot happened since then. Carmouche signed to UFC in 2013 and fought the highest opposition of Ronda Rousey, Jessica Andrade, Miesha Tate, and Alexis Davis. She is now on a two-win streak in 125 pounds over Jennifer Maia and Lucie Pudilova by unanimous decision. She is currently #3 in official UFC women’s flyweight rankings.
Valentina Shevchenko defended her title for the first time by a brutal KO to Jessica Eye with a second-round head kick. Kyrgyzstani-born fighter who now lives in Peru earned her UFC championship belt last December after defeating Joanna Jędrzejczyk by unanimous decision.
